PROJECT SUMMARY:
The SLOW WALK FAST— Proxy Walk series was inspired by the relationship between the creative process and sobriety and my interest in walking as an art medium. Evolution 1.0
[Artist Reflection]
In the book WALKING ART PRACTICE, Ernesto Pujol talks about walking as a means of shedding, of ‘releasing unnecessary, visible and invisible baggage’ and declares, “Walking is psychic editing” (p 17).
This project of walking on behalf of others amplifies this shedding idea, requiring a level of detachment from ‘self’. As proxy, I am by definition embodying another’s interest as I perform a given walk on their behalf. To do this, I have to set aside my own interests for the time being.
Pujol also suggests that a walking practice in service to others should be performed by a walker free of ‘unresolved life back home’ and that “the best way to engage a path is when the walker is already healed and capable of healing others” (p 21). I cannot claim either, but am continually making progress on both fronts. My hope is that these walks impact a person’s target issue in a way that feels beneficial.
